Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has unveiled an additional $60 million aid package for Ukraine during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in New York. This announcement, which includes defense, energy, and humanitarian support, underscores Australia’s commitment to supporting Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict with Russia.
The aid package comprises $45 million dedicated to supplying the Australian Defence Force equipment, $10 million for Ukraine’s energy support fund, and $5 million in humanitarian relief. With this latest contribution, Australia’s total assistance to Ukraine has reached approximately $1.9 billion since the Russian invasion in 2022.
In addition to the financial support, Albanese and Zelenskyy signed a 10-year bilateral security agreement aimed at enhancing military cooperation between the two nations. The agreement outlines plans to increase military training and explore joint initiatives in developing training facilities and co-producing air-defense systems, missiles, and drones.
Albanese emphasized that Australia’s support is vital for upholding international law and highlighted the broader global implications of the conflict in Ukraine. The security agreement is expected to remain relevant beyond the current war, providing a framework for sustained cooperation between Australia and Ukraine during peacetime.
President Zelenskyy welcomed the agreement, noting that it would bolster cooperation in security and trade, further strengthening the relationship between the two countries. The announcement marks a significant step in the ongoing international support for Ukraine’s efforts to defend its sovereignty and rebuild its infrastructure.
