US First Lady Melania Trump is set to host Russian and Ukrainian representatives at the White House on November 5, following her involvement in brokering a temporary ceasefire in Ukraine’s Kherson region. The initiative, which took place in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky, allowed for the evacuation of civilians from the conflict zone.

A White House statement announced that Melania Trump will address the ceasefire and related diplomatic efforts during an event at 11 a.m. Eastern Time on Thursday. Her office revealed that she independently facilitated contact between the two sides, resulting in a humanitarian agreement.

The ceasefire around Oleshky lasted from October 27 to November 1, enabling the evacuation of several hundred civilians who predominantly moved to territories controlled by Ukraine. Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine’s Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights, acknowledged Melania Trump’s team for their crucial role in securing the agreement and organizing the evacuation process. The agreement was signed by representatives from Ukraine, Russia, and the United States, with the US acting as a guarantor.

Despite the ceasefire, concerns have surfaced regarding the situation in Oleshky. Ukrainian military officials have expressed apprehension that Russian forces might have used the ceasefire to reposition equipment and fortify their positions. Ukrainian authorities, however, have disputed any violations of the ceasefire, clarifying that some military movements were related to demining activities.

There are still several hundred civilians remaining in Oleshky, with ongoing humanitarian aid for those unable or unwilling to evacuate. Future evacuation operations are under consideration as the situation evolves.

The upcoming meeting at the White House may serve as a platform to discuss the humanitarian agreement further and explore additional diplomatic engagements between Russia and Ukraine. However, the White House has not disclosed the identities of the representatives expected to attend or the specifics of the meeting’s agenda.
