The United States has extended an invitation to Russian President Vladimir Putin to participate in the G20 summit scheduled for December in Miami, as confirmed by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. This invitation marks a potentially significant diplomatic engagement amid ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine.
Rubio highlighted that the invitation provides an opportunity for Putin to engage with U.S. President Donald Trump and other global leaders. He also indicated that President Trump is open to a direct meeting with Putin, provided there is a clear agenda for discussion.
The Kremlin has yet to respond publicly to the invitation. Putin last attended an in-person G20 summit in 2019, although he participated virtually in the 2023 meeting. The upcoming summit is set to take place at Trump National Doral, a golf resort in Miami, with participants including major economies such as the United States, China, India, the European Union, and the United Kingdom.
This initiative comes as Washington continues its efforts to mediate an end to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Recently, President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy discussed potential measures towards a ceasefire, including a proposed halt in attacks on energy infrastructure.
Zelenskyy has previously stated his willingness to engage in talks with Putin if the Russian leader attends the summit. Ukraine remains focused on rallying international pressure on Russia while advocating for negotiations to resolve the conflict.
The invitation signals a possible shift in the U.S. approach to engaging with Russia, reflecting the Trump administration’s interest in pursuing direct diplomatic channels to address the war in Ukraine.
