During Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to Calgary, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney committed to bolstering Ukraine’s air defense and drone capabilities amidst ongoing Russian aggression. In a significant show of support, Canada is channeling C$350 million (US$253 million) through a U.S.-led initiative dedicated to supplying Ukraine with essential military equipment, training, and defense assistance. This aid arrives as Ukraine confronts a surge in missile and drone assaults from Russia.
Further enhancing its support, Canada will extend C$450 million in loan guarantees aimed at fortifying Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. This financial backing is intended to facilitate repairs on damaged facilities, increase energy storage capacity, and ensure stable electricity supplies to critical services, such as hospitals. The comprehensive support underscores Canada’s commitment to aiding Ukraine during this challenging period.
In a move to deepen bilateral ties, Carney and Zelenskyy also inked an agreement to pursue a “hundred-year partnership.” This strategic alliance will encompass various sectors, including defense, critical minerals, and energy, marking a long-term vision for cooperation between the two nations.
Additionally, Canada is set to allocate 30% of its newly produced domestic drones to Ukraine. According to Zelenskyy, these drones will play a crucial role on the battlefield, aiding Ukrainian forces and safeguarding civilians. This commitment highlights the technological dimension of Canada’s support in enhancing Ukraine’s defensive capabilities.
Looking ahead, Zelenskyy is anticipated to engage with U.S. President Donald Trump in New York later this month, potentially during the United Nations General Assembly. This meeting could serve as a platform to further efforts aimed at reviving peace negotiations to resolve the ongoing conflict.
