Zelenskyy Advocates for Ukraine-Russia Peace Talks, Seeks Meeting with Putin

by admin477351

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for renewed peace talks involving Ukraine, the United States, and Russia, emphasizing that these negotiations should lead to a direct meeting between national leaders to resolve the ongoing conflict. This announcement follows a meeting in St Petersburg between US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which took place a day after Witkoff’s discussions with Zelenskyy in Norway.

Russia has indicated a willingness to resume negotiations, potentially in November, with Abu Dhabi suggested as a possible venue. Zelenskyy has expressed Ukraine’s readiness to participate in talks aimed at ending the war, proposing an agenda that includes a ceasefire, an energy truce, and humanitarian measures such as the return of prisoners. Kyiv is hopeful that discussions can start in early November, while Russia has proposed a date of November 10 or later.

Zelenskyy also mentioned that Ukraine might agree to a freeze in fighting along the current front lines, contingent upon receiving security guarantees from the United States and Europe. However, the negotiations face complications due to disagreements over territorial demands and Russia’s security concerns.

Following the discussions, Steve Witkoff described the diplomatic talks as constructive and reaffirmed US President Donald Trump’s commitment to achieving a lasting peace agreement. Despite these diplomatic efforts, there remains uncertainty about whether the involved parties can overcome their differences and facilitate a direct meeting between Zelenskyy and Putin.
