Hungary and the European Commission have finalized an agreement that will release billions of euros in European Union funds previously held up due to concerns over governance and transparency. The deal, which involves a commitment from Hungary to implement a series of reforms, is seen as a crucial step forward in enhancing the country’s relationship with the EU.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that Hungary has started to address key issues, including transparency and the management of EU funds. The planned reforms focus on bolstering anti-corruption measures, improving oversight systems, and integrating with the European Public Prosecutor’s Office. These initiatives aim to ensure that EU funds are utilized effectively and transparently.
As part of the agreement, Hungary is set to receive a substantial funding package totaling €16.2 billion. This funding will be directed towards various sectors such as infrastructure development, energy security, housing, transportation, and business growth projects. Additional funds may become available if Hungary continues to implement further reforms, particularly in higher education and academic governance.
Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar highlighted the importance of this agreement for the nation’s economic ambitions, describing it as a significant boost to their development and investment strategies. Furthermore, the agreement enables Hungarian students to fully participate in the Erasmus exchange program from the next academic year, marking a positive development in educational collaboration.
However, migration policy remains a contentious issue in Hungary’s discussions with the EU. Prime Minister Magyar reiterated Hungary’s stance on border protection and strict controls on illegal migration while emphasizing the country’s commitment to fulfilling its European obligations. He assured that Hungary will not establish migrant camps within its territory, focusing instead on safeguarding the EU’s external borders. This funding agreement represents a pivotal moment in mending the strained relations between Hungary and the European Commission, following prolonged disputes over judicial reforms and budget allocations.
