Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden has reaffirmed his country’s commitment to supporting Ukraine as part of the European Union’s broader efforts to counter Russian aggression. Following a recent EU summit, Frieden emphasized the necessity of continued military and financial aid to Ukraine, warning that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s ambitions might extend beyond Ukraine if left unchecked.
Frieden argued that yielding to Russian aggression would enable Moscow to accomplish its objectives, underscoring the importance of protecting Ukraine’s sovereignty. The EU leaders at the summit also discussed potential measures to impose stricter restrictions on tourist visas for Russian citizens. The aim is to reduce the number of Russian tourists within the EU without instituting a complete ban. Frieden noted that Luxembourg would align its visa policy with Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel.
The summit also tackled the complex issue of migration policy, although no consensus was reached among the EU leaders. Frieden called for a balanced approach that addresses the challenges of irregular migration while recognizing the economic benefits of legal migration. He highlighted Luxembourg’s dependence on foreign workers to satisfy its labor market demands, pointing to the critical role that legal migration plays in the nation’s economy.
