Ukraine, Russia, and US to Hold Peace Talks in Abu Dhabi in November

by admin477351

Ukraine, Russia, and the United States have agreed to engage in peace talks in Abu Dhabi during the first half of November, as announced by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This development signals a potential revival of diplomatic efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

According to Zelenskyy, the initial phase of negotiations will occur at a technical level, with the possibility of future discussions involving the countries’ leaders. However, he emphasized that progress hinges on Moscow’s willingness to engage in the talks. The announcement follows discussions between Zelenskyy and U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who had previously met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg. The Kremlin has also confirmed plans for the talks to take place in early November in the United Arab Emirates.

Zelenskyy has underscored the necessity for any resulting peace agreement to include robust security assurances for Ukraine, along with adequate funding to support its military over the next decade. He has also urged European nations to take part in the negotiations.

The proposed discussions come after a prolonged period of stalled diplomatic attempts to end the war in Ukraine. Past negotiations have encountered significant obstacles, primarily due to disputes over territorial claims, security arrangements, and ceasefire terms.

In a related issue, Zelenskyy mentioned that restrictions on Ukraine’s access to the Starlink and Starshield communication systems remain in place, despite assurances that services had been restored. This technical barrier adds another layer of complexity to Ukraine’s diplomatic challenges.

While the planned meeting in Abu Dhabi may present a new opportunity for dialogue, substantial differences between Kyiv and Moscow persist, posing ongoing challenges to the peace process.
