This summer, Europe has faced a harrowing reality with at least 35,000 excess deaths linked to a series of severe heatwaves, and experts anticipate the actual number could be much higher as more countries finalize their evaluations. Germany, France, and Spain have been particularly affected, together accounting for over 25,000 of these estimated deaths, which underscores the escalating threat of climate change-induced heat events.
Germany alone has reported approximately 14,000 deaths attributed to heat between April and early August, marking the deadliest summer for heat in its recorded history. Meanwhile, Spain has faced nearly 5,000 heat-related fatalities since May, setting a new record for the country. In France, the preliminary data indicates around 7,300 excess deaths from late May to July, although this number could rise once August figures are included.
Other European countries such as the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, and Switzerland have also experienced significant spikes in mortality during the intense heatwaves. The soaring temperatures, frequently surpassing 40°C across vast regions of western and central Europe, have led to numerous national and local temperature records being shattered. Climate scientists have been warning that such extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and severe due to global climate change.
Identifying heat-related deaths poses challenges, as extreme temperatures often exacerbate pre-existing health conditions like cardiovascular and respiratory issues, rather than being directly recorded as the cause of death. This complexity in attributing deaths to heat may cause delays and underreporting in mortality figures.
As countries continue to compile delayed mortality data and assess August’s impact, the anticipated rise in the death toll serves as a stark reminder of the growing public health risks associated with increasingly severe heatwaves.
