History Repeats: Venezuelan Opposition Leader Machado Compares Trump to Washington in Nobel Handover

by admin477351

Drawing a direct line between the American Revolution and the current crisis in Venezuela, opposition leader Maria Corina Machado presented her Nobel Peace Prize medal to President Donald Trump. Calling him the “heir of Washington,” Machado used the White House meeting to symbolize a historic repayment of gratitude. She likened the moment to the Marquis de Lafayette’s support for Venezuelan liberator Simon Bolivar two centuries ago.
The meeting, lasting over an hour, was the first between Machado and Trump. While Trump has openly coveted the Nobel Prize, the committee in Oslo issued a statement reminding the public that the award cannot be shared or transferred. The accolade remains Machado’s, regardless of who holds the gold medal.
The gesture serves as a bridge-building exercise with a President who has been critical of Machado. Trump has previously dismissed her as unfit and expressed doubts about her ability to command respect in Venezuela. His foreign policy has recently focused on pressuring interim president Delcy Rodriguez to accommodate U.S. oil interests under threat of force.
Despite Trump’s pragmatic and sometimes harsh stance, Machado’s rhetoric was warm and optimistic. She characterized the meeting as “great” and emphasized Trump’s awareness of the Venezuelan people’s suffering. By gifting the medal, she aims to solidify U.S. support for her opposition movement against a backdrop of internal and external political maneuvering.
The interaction highlights the unique personal diplomacy Machado is employing. By validating Trump’s desire for recognition and linking him to historical heroes, she is attempting to overcome his stated preference for dealing with other political actors in Venezuela. It remains to be seen if this symbolic act will shift U.S. policy in her favor.
