Austria is exploring the possibility of joining Luxembourg’s GovSat 2 satellite communications initiative as part of efforts to enhance defense and security cooperation. During a recent visit to Luxembourg, Austrian Defence Minister Klaudia Tanner engaged in discussions with her Luxembourg counterpart, Yuriko Backes, focusing on expanding bilateral collaboration in areas such as defense, space, and cybersecurity.
The meeting also included talks with satellite operator SES regarding Austria’s potential involvement in the GovSat 2 program. Minister Tanner emphasized the increasing importance of secure satellite communications in light of rising geopolitical tensions, noting that enhanced collaboration could bolster the resilience of state communications and support Europe’s strategic autonomy.
GovSat 2 is intended to deliver secure communication services for Luxembourg’s defense sector, as well as for the European Union, NATO, and partner countries. The satellite is slated for launch in 2029, and Austria’s participation could play a significant role in the project’s development.
In addition to satellite communications, the two countries signed a letter of intent to fortify cooperation across various defense-related fields. These include cybersecurity, space technology, and military training. However, Austria has not yet disclosed the potential investment amount if it decides to participate in the GovSat 2 initiative.
