Adelaide’s green spaces are at the heart of a heated debate as conservation groups and local activists raise alarm over the potential removal of trees for Elon Musk’s proposed Tesla factory. While the Marion city council has given initial approval, the “Trees not Teslas” movement is spearheading the fight to protect the environment and challenge the project’s broader implications.
The environmental concerns are a significant component of the widespread opposition to the proposed Tesla showroom and battery recycling plant. Conservationists argue that replacing mature trees with saplings, as proposed by Tesla, does not adequately compensate for the loss of established ecosystems and their associated benefits.
However, the opposition to the project extends beyond environmentalism. Many of the nearly 1,000 public submissions to the council, 95% of which were against the proposal, also expressed strong “anti-Tesla and anti-Elon Musk sentiment.” This ideological dimension adds another layer of complexity to the local planning dispute.
Despite the strong public and environmental objections, the Marion city council voted to approve the project’s progression to the state government for final approval. The council cited the economic benefits, including 100 jobs and millions of dollars in revenue, as key factors in their decision. The fight now shifts to the state level, where activists hope to prevent further environmental damage.
