Trump and Hegseth Promise More Destruction as Iran Refuses to Break

by admin477351

President Donald Trump and his defense secretary Pete Hegseth presented a united front on Friday, promising dramatically escalating military operations against Iran even as Tehran showed no signs of yielding to the week-long campaign of aerial bombardment. Trump demanded unconditional surrender; Hegseth confirmed that US firepower was about to surge. Iran, meanwhile, launched fresh salvos of missiles and drones across the region.
The Friday operations were already among the most intense of the conflict. US B-2 stealth bombers struck Iran’s deepest and most hardened military infrastructure, dropping dozens of 2,000-pound penetrating bombs on buried ballistic missile launch sites. A large Iranian naval vessel used as a drone platform was struck at sea and possibly destroyed. The head of US Central Command personally confirmed the details of the operations, which were described as operationally significant.
In Lebanon, Israel escalated with matching intensity. The military issued its most sweeping evacuation orders yet, covering over one million residents of Beirut and surrounding areas. The Dahiyeh district, a Hezbollah stronghold of more than 600,000 people, was emptied and then struck repeatedly, reducing it to rubble and fire. Israel’s chief of staff promised that the current phase was giving way to an even more aggressive one, with additional surprises ahead.
Iran did not capitulate. Missiles and drones were launched at US military bases in Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain. Some were intercepted; others struck targets including civilian buildings in Bahrain. More missiles were fired at Israel. Hezbollah continued its rocket campaign in Lebanon and wounded Israeli soldiers near the border with anti-tank fire. Iranian state television broadcast scenes of national defiance, showing Friday prayer crowds in Tehran mourning Khamenei and pledging continued resistance.
The contrast between the promises coming out of Washington and the reality on the ground in Tehran is striking. Trump and Hegseth project certainty of victory. Iran’s government, despite suffering more than 1,230 deaths and devastating damage to its military infrastructure, has not cracked. Its leadership council met to plan for the future. Its armed forces continued fighting. Whether the promised surge in US firepower will change that calculus is a question that may soon be answered — at a very high price.
